I recently received this question in my inbox from an EmailMoxie.com reader.
"I read somewhere that the use of 'RE:' at the start of an email subject line gives the message a better chance of not being thrown in a spam filter. Is this true?"
What do you think about adding RE: to the beginning of a subject line? Is it deceptive? A good idea? Does it work? Share your thoughts with us!
It might help avoid the spam filter, but it is absolutely deceptive and should be avoided by any legitimate marketer.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a horrible, misleading practice.
ReplyDeleteAnyone that is using this as a technique to get an open should be counseled to stop immediately.
I'm not so sure that a simple "RE" would help inbox delivery any. ISP filters are very sophisticated and use many factors to determine where an email should be placed. I doubt that they are so dumb that you can trick them with a play of the subject line.
ReplyDeleteBesides, the two commentators before me are correct, it would be a bad practice to use such a tactic and i dare anyone to come up with a subject line that is creative enough for legitimate use.
Thanks for the great comments! Keep them coming. Adding RE: in the subject line sounds like a bad idea any way you look at it.
